Clare Spottiswoode CBE is a mathematician and an economist by training. She began her career in H M Treasury before starting her own software company. She was Director General of Ofgas, the UK gas regulator, for five years from 1993 and Deputy Chairman of British Energy from 2002 to 2007. From November 2006 till end 2009 she was the Policyholder Advocate for Aviva plc. Clare is currently Chairman of Gas Strategies Limited, and also a non-executive director of Energy Solutions Inc and Chairman of Magnox. She is also a non-Executive Director of G4S. She was a member of the Independent Commission on Banking (known as the Vickers Commission) which reported in September 2011, and whose recommendations are currently the subject of proposed legislation. Clare was appointed one of the independent directors of the Payments Council in 2012.
