The purpose of these tests is to check that the PICC will be able to function correctly throughout its intended lifetime (nominally 10 years). We expose the MRTD to a number of simulated environmental scenarios and subsequently check the behaviour of the PICC.
These tests are performed on personalized PICCs to allow for a full retrieval transaction on the PICC. This gives assurance that the PICC remains intact and that performance, in terms of speed and reliability, is unaffected also.
| Purpose | Test | ||||||
Ageing Test Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been put through a simulated ageing process of up to 10 years. |
Exposure to 80 °C and 50% relative humidity for 21 days.
Climate Test Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been exposed to a variety of atmospheric conditions. |
Extended exposure to the following conditions. a)Tropical b)Temperate c) Polar d) Arid e) Dashboard of car |
Temperature / Humidity Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been exposed to greater extremes than the climate test, but for a shorter duration. |
-35°C to +50°C cycle | ||||||
Ultraviolet Light The purpose of this test is to determine any adverse effects arising from exposure of a card test sample to ultraviolet light (see ISOAEC 7816-l :I 998). |
Exposure to monochromatic light at a wavelength of 254 nm.
Atmospheric Pressure This test simulates transportation in an unpressurised aircraft. |
The PICC is exposed to a range of barometric pressures.
Short Term Exposure to Social Substances Checks the behaviour of the PICC after exposure of the MRTD to a range of substances. |
The MRTD is exposed to the following; sodium chloride, acetic acid, sodium carbonate, ethyl alcohol, sucrose, fuel B (according to ISO 1817:1985), ethylene glycol.
Perspiration Test Checks the behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been exposed to long term contamination by perspiration. |
The MRTD is exposed to artificial perspiration for 24 hours.
Dynamic Bending Test for CIC page Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after bending the MRTD’s data page. |
Exposure to bending (1000 times by 130° each) and extraction at an angle of 180°.
Dynamic Bending Test for MRTD Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been exposed to environmental stress such as the MRTD being placed in the holder’s back pocket and sat on. |
Frequency 1000 |
Dynamic Torsion Test Checks the correct behaviour of the PICC after the MRTD has been exposed to environmental stress. |
The MRTD is twisted by +/- 15 degrees at a frequency of 0.5Hz for 1000 cycles. |
(Note: Further tests soon to be finalised include impact and pen and roller pressure)
