American Express Contactless Terminal Certification

Since 2004 Consult Hyperion has been certifying American Express contactless payment terminals for reader vendors from around the world.
We have developed custom hardware and software testing set-ups for this service. This has included building a six-axis robot (affectionately known as Marvin) and the software to control its operation and movement. With the use of this robot reference Proximity Integrated Circuit Cards (PICCs) can be placed at exact locations (with sub 1mm accuracy) within the reader RF field, allowing accurate measurements to be taken and a three dimensional ‘view’ of the RF field to be built up.
In order to provide this service, we needed detailed knowledge of payment technologies in general and American Express Expresspay specifically. Team members also have a detailed low level understanding of contactless communications including the waveforms, encodings and protocols. This in depth technical knowledge has allowed our team to identify and help resolve numerous issues identified in the products being certified.
